বাঙালির অদূর পশ্চিমে

This Book is an outcome of our journey through the length and breadth of Jharkhand basically in search of the footprints of Buddha . The local myths and folklores among the tribals of Jharkhand indicate the presence of Siddharth in places around Hazaribagh before his enlightenment. In fact many of the Buddhist generic symbols can be identified in the prevalent tribal art like Sohrai and Cover . Tribal life and rituals also carry the prominent signatures of the early Buddhist way of life . Apart from that earlier tribal connection , later monastic Buddhism also definitely grew in Jharkhand during the medieval period , though it is not a well documented fact in mainstream historiography . The huge relics of that period are still scattered over the geographical space of Jharkhand and Bihar border areas . This Book is an account of our different modes of engagements with the extant remains of the forgotten Buddhist Past of these areas - in distant villages and roadside ruins of temples where broken sculptures of those periods are found abandoned . They are not lucky enough to catch the attention of Archaeological survey till now ! Apart from the Buddhist connections , a few articles in this book also narrate the story of significant cultural variations of these places over the last 500 years or so until the last century when these places gradually became kind of colony of Bengalis - a not far away Poschim ( West) of Bengal which was newly discovered by the urban colonial Bengalis - known as DANCHI here in tribal pronunciation , as a hinterland of their catharsis of new social libido, they developed as a part of their new Western cultural connection... In fact the colonial genre of newly urbanized Bengali happened to be an altogether new class in Indian social history - a class free from the earlier pre- colonial religious bondage . The collection of articles in this Book is an attempt to capture a few glimpses of the gradual cultural transmutation of the geographical spaces of what is Jharkhand today throughout the last 2500 years or so - from arrival of Siddharth to the modern Bengali DANCHI folks here .
